What to Expect-8th grade Drama

Welcome to 8th grade Drama!

Weeks 1-2: Intro to Theater arts (Rules and Procedures). 
    The first two weeks of theater arts we will work on becoming an ensemble and proper audience etiquette. We will also learn about what makes a good actor or actress (focus, courage, risk taking). 
 
Week 3: Express YourSelfie
This week students are learning aboutthe Universal Facial Expressions and how important facial expressions are in theater. Students will participate in several activities and finally create a selfie photo grid of the seven Universal Facial Expressions. Students will also include a written portion to this assignment. Students will be given five days to complete this assignment. At the end of the third week students will have their first assessment.
 
Week 4-5: What Makes a Production
   During the next two weeks students will learn about the jobs available in theater. The last job we will discuss with be the job of actors and actresses. Students will learn about characterization and how to analyze a character. To emphasize this strategy of studying a character students will complete their second assignment called, Guess Who.
 
Week 6-7: StarGirl
     We will begin a short novel about conformity and discuss it's relevance in our school. We will also discuss empathy and how it relates to everyday life. Students will then begin to study a chosen character from the novel that they feel they can relate to and possibly become in a play. Students will use the same method used in the Guess Who assignment, to produce an informational one-pager (third assignment). During week 7 students will be receive Stargirl monologues to memorize.
 
Weeks 8-9: Final Performances
During week 8 students will learn how to deliver an engaging monologue and strategies to overcome stage fright. Week 9 students will present their chosen monologues.
